Lorca makes repairs after earthquake
Lorca in Murcia has been left devastated after an earthquake hit on May 11th. 10 people were killed and almost 300 seriously injured. The town council has reported that 500 applications have been received for home repairs, some of which involve completely rebuilding the houses. The earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale and is reportedly the most serious to hit Spain in 50 years. The council has already successfully helped 1200 people but with 1500 people a day applying for help there is still a way to go. Not surprisingly, the council’s website has seen a huge rise in interest. Whilst it used to receive approximately 1700 hits a day, it is now getting around 200,000 in the same amount of time. Lorca is known for its traditional buildings, many of which collapsed or were damaged during the earthquake. Emergency military units were sent to the scene to aid the injured and help to restore some sense of normality to the deeply shocked civilians. The danger is over now but the problems are far from over for the residents of Lorca as they try to get their houses back in order. However, it is clear that the council is doing everything it can to get the town back to its historic best.
