Resort details
At least ten theatres, the modern art gallery and cultural centre, the national film library and many private galleries make up the cultural heart of the Raval. But this is accompanied y a vibrant night-life of bars and restaurants.
You can walk to virtually anywhere-else in the old city - the sea, Plaza Cataluña, the Ramblas, El Born, the Gotico, the park of Montjuic, the Eixample in 5-15 minutes. For Gaudi fans the Raval has its own Gaudi building the Palau Guëll.
The law, philosophy and history faculties of Barcelona University are also based in the barrio as is the Pompeu Fabra Media University so there are many "alternative" shops and businesses catering to a young crowd. The best thing about the Raval for tourists (apart from cheap eateries and drinkeries everywhere) is its amazingly central location.
Local area
Barcelona is a Mediterranean city where the splendor achieved by Catalonian modernism is one of the most patent displays. Barcelona is a progressive, industrial, middle-class and European city, while at the same time being traditionalist, popular, typically Mediterranean and having a pleasant climate.Barcelona, more than just a single city, is really a collection of multi-faceted and diverse cities. The visitor unfamiliar with its history might be surprised that such a modern and enterprising city preserves its historic Gothic centre almost intact, or by the curious contrast between the maze of narrow streets and the grid-like layout of the Eixample, the urban planning "Enlargement" project of the end of the 19th century.
Barcelona stands on a plain that slopes gently down from the Sierra de Collserola (with it highest mountain, Mount Tibidabo,at 512m) to the sea.
Barcelona dates back to Roman times and is still growing today. It's considered by many to be the top European holiday destination and in terms of city breaks it's the number one for visitors from the UK, France, Germany and many other countries.
The medieval centre is the largest medieval quarter in the world, for art nouveau architecture it rivals Paris with Gaudí heading the list. Famous painters like Picasso, Miró and Dalí all spent time here and have museums dedicated to them. The cuisine is excellent, the night-life second to none and the city boasts mountain views and 7km of beaches. Many consider it a city paradise!
Places of interest
Barcelona is loaded with points of interests and has a great public transit system to get you there at a reasonable cost as well. Full of museums including Picasso and Miró as well as MACBA and Catalan History Museum. It is also great for kids with a zoo, aquarium, amusement park at the top of Tibidabo and tons of outdoor parks and gardens including a castle at the top of Montjuic. There you can also see the famous Magic Fountain show and depending what month you are sure to catch a local "fiesta major" or neighbourhood celebration. Don´t forget the numerous bars, discos and amazing restaurants and cafés!!!
